Family Medicine Center

Facility

Photo of Family Medicine Center

The Family Medicine Center is a 15,000 sq ft facility built in 2003 and provides comprehensive family care by both residents and faculty. It was specially designed for resident teaching. When residents are in clinic, they have two to three examination rooms for their exclusive use. A family counseling room and two procedure rooms also are available.

Number of Clinics

  • First Year 1-2 clinics per week
  • Second Year 2-3 clinics per week
  • Third Year 3-5 clinics per week

Patient Volumes Managed

Residents will average seeing 6 patients per clinic during their first year, about 8 patients per clinic during their second year and 10 patients per clinic in their third year. Managing this clinic volume requires learning some efficiency as the patients managed tend to be complex. Patient demand for services has always been high and patient availability has never been a problem.

Other Outpatient Clinic Experiences

In addition to family medicine clinics, many other outpatient specialty clinics are structured for teaching. Training in the specialty clinics is based on the medical problems rather than continuity of care. These opportunities double the outpatient training available to residents in our program.

I wanted to be close to the Bay Area, which is where my husband works, and join a strong Family Medicine program that focused on a multi-cultural population; this program was the perfect combination.

During my visits to the program, I got the sense that they exert a big effort to care for their residents' well being. It is very reassuring to know I will always be supported even when the workload gets overwhelming.

The program was very supportive of medical couples, allowing us to schedule our vacation and elective time together.

I found the fact that the residency cares for the underserved, but does it in such a well-equipped and modern hospital, very appealing.

I liked the fact that the faculty is large and dedicated to practice in the same health system as the Residency. When I joined the faculty after residency, I became a part of one of the largest medical groups in Modesto.

As a single resident, it is important that the residents and faculty have a lot of camaraderie and support for each other.

Our Residency education is based on Adult Learning Principles, where the resident is placed in a position of responsibility to patients and works with faculty to develop a customized learning plan.
