Program Goals and Philosophy

Our 30-resident program works with a large, multi-specialty faculty to staff a county health system, delivering both hospital and outpatient care. This system is the health care "safety-net" for our community, caring for many people who would otherwise be without care. There are no other residencies in Stanislaus County.

Inpatient care is done at Doctors Medical Center in Modesto, which has a large obstetrical service with 4,500 deliveries per year and a level III intensive care nursery. Outpatient care is conducted primarily in Stanislaus County Health Service Agency's clinics.

Our patient population is diverse: 50% are Hispanic and 10% are Southeast Asian. The ability to speak Spanish is desirable, although translators are easily available since many of our staff are bilingual.

Many of our patients are economically disadvantaged. Fifty-five percent of our patients are on Medicaid, 20% are covered by a Stanislaus County health program for patients formerly covered under Medi-Cal, 20% are on Medi-Care, and 5% are private pay. We are proud of the care that we provide to people who might otherwise be denied access.

Doctors Medical Centers' Mission is to be recognized as the foremost health care facility in Central California - The yardstick against which all other health care facilities are measured - for the provision of high-quality, cost-effective and state-of-the-art medical services in a compassionate, caring manner responsive to the needs of the community.

The Stanislaus County Health Services Agency, a participant in Valley Consortium for Medical Education, is dedicated to their mission, which "is to lead the development, implementation and promotion of public policy and health care services to achieve excellent physical, psychological and social well being". Their vision statement is simply "Leading the Way to a Healthy Community".

Last but not least, the residency program has an educational philosophy that guides our training model and has resulted in excellent graduates ready to enter a wide variety of practice settings.

I wanted to be close to the Bay Area, which is where my husband works, and join a strong Family Medicine program that focused on a multi-cultural population; this program was the perfect combination.

During my visits to the program, I got the sense that they exert a big effort to care for their residents' well being. It is very reassuring to know I will always be supported even when the workload gets overwhelming.

The program was very supportive of medical couples, allowing us to schedule our vacation and elective time together.

I found the fact that the residency cares for the underserved, but does it in such a well-equipped and modern hospital, very appealing.

I liked the fact that the faculty is large and dedicated to practice in the same health system as the Residency. When I joined the faculty after residency, I became a part of one of the largest medical groups in Modesto.

As a single resident, it is important that the residents and faculty have a lot of camaraderie and support for each other.

Our Residency education is based on Adult Learning Principles, where the resident is placed in a position of responsibility to patients and works with faculty to develop a customized learning plan.
